- While working as a line cook years ago, I was introduced to Japanese cuisine was immediately hooked. In an effort to reduce my thrice weekly splurges on sushi, I picked up “Japanese Cooking: A simple art” and thus began a mini-obsession with Japanese culture, particularily with regards to its cuisine. Since then, I've become a teacher and heard about the Japan Memorial Fulbright Fund soon after I began teaching. Intrigued, I researched the program and set my hopes on applying the year after I completed my Masters degree. I received a letter of my acceptance will soon be on a plane to San Francisco, where I'll meet up with 119 other teachers, then depart to Tokyo. We'll spend a week in Tokyo, and then break into smaller groups by prefecture, my own being Hikone, Shiga. I'll maintain this blog throughout my travels and update my students regularly. Upon my return to the states, I will use my experiences resources to share what I’ve learned about Japan with my students, school, and community. I am eminently thankful to the Japanese government for awarding me this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience their country, culture, and cuisine.
